We were absolutely stoked when we heard the news that Toyota will be expanding the Corolla family once again for the 2022 model year. The Corolla Hatchback joined the traditional Sedan a few years ago, then the Corolla Hybrid was introduced for 2020. Now? The iconic nameplate is getting even bigger, as the automaker introduced the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross. The new compact crossover is positioned between the C-HR and RAV4, so let’s see how it measures up to its big sibling by comparing it to the 2021 Toyota RAV4.
2022 Toyota Corolla Cross (L FWD) | Vs | 2021 Toyota RAV4 (LE FWD) |
169 hp | Horsepower | 203 hp |
32 mpg | Combined Fuel Efficiency | 30 mpg |
25.5 cu. ft. | Cargo Capacity | 37.6 cu. ft. |
5 | Seating | 5 |
As you can tell, the Corolla Cross is rightly positioned just below the RAV4 on the lineup. We looked at the base trim level when equipped with front-wheel drive for each model. While both crossovers can fit up to five passengers, the larger RAV4 has a leg up in both power and space. Neither of these things are a surprise given their positioning on the lineup. The RAV4 generates 34 horsepower more than the Corolla Cross, but that’s not a massive difference in the grand scheme of things.
Besides, that deficit in power does allow the Corolla Cross to get a slight leg up in fuel economy. The extra 2 miles per gallon combined across highway and city driving will be about as noticeable to your wallet as the difference in power would be to your lead foot. The biggest difference is, of course, cargo capacity. The smaller 2022 Corolla Cross doesn’t have quite as much room to pack full of your luggage or groceries, but that’s to be expected from a smaller crossover.
We’re thrilled with the addition of the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross. If it sounds like the right new crossover utility vehicle for you, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us right here at McGee Toyota of Claremont today!
